We recommend that your pet have, at a minimum, an annual veterinary checkup. Our annual veterinary services checkup allows us to perform important tests on your pet to proactively determine whether they have any ailments. Checkups are included in our pet wellness plans, and can save you on future treatment costs and extend your pet’s life.
Your pet should have blood work performed annually as a component of our routine veterinary services. Yearly blood work will help us detect infections or diseases before they become serious—providing for more effective treatment. Learn more about veterinary diagnostics here.
Yes. A common misconception among pet owners is that if their animal lives exclusively indoors they do not need heartworm prevention medication. Heartworm disease is primarily spread through mosquito bites and mosquitos can enter the house through open windows or as you are entering or exiting the home.
In addition, even if your pet lives indoors, it is possible that they may escape through a door accidentally left open or as you are entering or exiting the home.
Necessary vaccinations vary by pet species. Below is a list of pet vaccinations that are absolutely necessary for dogs and cats:
This list is an overview of the vaccinations your dog or cat should have, but certain breeds may require additional vaccinations. Check with our veterinarians to see if your pet needs any additional vaccinations.

Yes. Brushing your pet’s teeth helps remove plaque, which causes tooth decay. Brushing your pet’s teeth is the most effective way to keep their teeth and gums healthy.
We generally recommend that at a minimum, your pet have an annual dental cleaning. However, some pets have more complicated oral health issues that require more frequent checkups, cleanings, and treatment.
We can perform many animal dentistry services in house that ordinary veterinary hospitals cannot, so you may be able to avoid the added expense of taking your pet to an animal dentistry specialist. Bring your pet in for a thorough visual check and x-ray to see if your pet has any oral health issues. Generally, we will be able to provide in-house treatment and care, but we will make a referral to a pet dental specialist if necessary.
Broken teeth are common among pets. Several species of animals are notorious for chewing on objects, which can ultimately lead to broken teeth. If a tooth is broken to the pulp canal, the pain for your pet can be severe and eventually, chronic. Antibiotics and pain medication can mitigate this pain temporarily, but the only long-term solution is tooth extraction.
Maintaining proper dental health for your pet is an important component of being a pet owner. Regular teeth brushing and the benefits are two fold – you help to prevent periodontal disease in your pet and it helps you to recognize potential problems before they become severe.
Beyond routine brushing and checkups, there are a number of special chews, treats, dental rinses and foods that are designed to help clean your pet’s teeth.
Village Vet of Urbana uses anesthesia to minimize or remove all discomfort for your pet during dental procedures. Our veterinarians place a premium on your pet’s comfort and well-being. After dental procedures are completed, your pet will generally return to normal within one to three days.
Since most animals will not sit still for the length of time or discomfort required for pet dentistry services, anesthesia is required. Once your pet is sedated, tarter and plaque are removed from the teeth. If there are teeth that are damaged, infected or have root exposure, these teeth will be extracted. We then polish your pet’s teeth and provide pain management medication if necessary.

Post-surgery, we can prescribe pain medications if your pet needs them. Managing your pet’s comfort after surgery can speed healing time because your pet will not scratch or bite at the surgery site.
If you suspect your pet has re-injured the surgical site, call us immediately for advice. If the problem is more serious, bring your pet in immediately for treatment.
Decreased appetite is common after surgery, so do not become alarmed if your pet appears to have lost his or her normal appetite after operation. Your pet’s appetite should return to normal within a few days. If loss of appetite is a persistent problem, contact us for more information.
The length of time after surgery before you pet can return home depends on the procedure. Generally, pets undergoing outpatient surgical procedures will be ready to go by the close of business the same day. For most other procedures, your pet should be able to return home in one to three days.
We believe in minimizing your pet’s pain as much as possible during and after surgery. Proper pain management will make your pet more comfortable and speed healing. We administer pain medication before veterinary surgery procedures and post operation. During veterinary surgery procedures we use local and general anesthesia and post-operation we can provide pain medication if necessary.
We perform several kinds of surgical procedures for dogs and cats. Contact us for more information.
Anesthesia is safe for most pets, but we will give your pet a check-up before surgery to ensure they can safely be given anesthesia.
When we place your dog or cat under general anesthesia, we closely monitor them during the procedure and recovery to make sure everything is functioning as it should.
It is important that veterinary surgery procedures are performed on an empty stomach to reduce the chances of your pet vomiting during or after anesthesia is administered. Your pet should not be given any food after 10 p.m. the night before surgery is performed.
